Sur le promontoire du Rocher de la Barre, au-dessus du bourg de La Malène, se trouvent les vestiges du Castellum Melena appelé également Amarillès. Lors des fouilles, des éléments, tel qu’un autel, révèlent un ancien lieu de culte. On peut émettre l’hypothèse que l’origine du nom de La Malène proviendrait de ce site. C’est en contrebas de ce lieu, sur la rive droite du Tarn, que se construisent les premiers Mas du bourg. Au fil des siècles, le village s’étendra davantage et connaîtra de multiples remaniements.
